Volkswagen has gone a long way since the design and production of a ‘People’s Car’ or ‘Volkswagen’ in the 1930s. Before the war, only wealthy Germans could afford to buy a car and ordinary German citizens got by using bicycles. The German government considered this an opportunity to produce a car every ordinary German family can afford. The government challenged private companies from the German auto making industry to design and produce a car worth not more than 990 Reischmark or $396 in 1930s dollars, and it should be able to fit two adults and three children. None of the private German car companies were able to build a car with the price tag the German government gave which forced the government to build their own factory and build the car on their own. They commissioned Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche, later on the owner of Porsche, to design the very first Beetle. World War II interrupted the commercial release of the car when it had to be retooled to become a war service vehicle. After the war, no one knew what to do with the Volkswagen some even considered the car ‘too ugly and too noisy’ and ‘not worth a damn’ but thanks to the efforts of British Army Major Ivan Hirst the Volkswagen survived and became a symbol of German recovery after the war.
