The Importance Of Safety In Convertible Car Seats

Of all the factors that are important to car seats, no factor is more important than safety.  Babies at this age are especially susceptible to the dangerous effects of a car accident so every step should be taken to protect them.  One product that does an excellent job of this is convertible car seats.  This relatively new creation is impressive in this area because of all the features that help combat the negative forces created by a car accident.  Here, we take a look at a number of these features and how they can help protect your little one.

One way that convertible car seats help protect babies in car crashes is by lowering their center of gravity in the seat.  What this does is give the car seat more stability in a front end collision and also reduces the forward rotation that occurs in these types of accidents.  How the car seats reduce the center of gravity is usually through one of two ways.  The first way is by simply having the seat area lower in the chair so the baby is lower in the seat than in a regular seat.  The second way the center of gravity is sometimes reduces is by the use of certain material that compresses at the point of a crash.  What happens is the material compresses just under the seat area of the car seat and the result is the baby sinks lower in the car seat.  Both of these features have the result of reducing the forward rotation and so the child will not have its head extend out as much making it less likely they will have an impact with the back of the front car seat.

A second way that convertible car seats help protect the child is through the use of a 5 point harness seat belt.  This harness helps by spreading the impact of the collision to the five strongest parts of the child’s body.  The result is that the baby is able to better handle the impact of the crash and the power of the crash is diluted.  This also reduces the forward rotation to a certain degree as well.  Another nice thing about these car seats is that the better ones allow for easy adjustments so even as the child grows, a snug fit is easy to obtain.

A third way the convertible car seats can help protect your little one is through the use of time release tether system that helps delay the release of the top part of the car seat in a front end collision.  This webbing helps slow the forward rotation and will help keep your child’s upper body and head from jutting out too far.  Much like the other features mentioned, it helps keep the child from coming into contact with the front seat which is normally the most dangerous area for a baby in a front end collision.

A fourth way these car seats help protect children is in the design of the shell of car seat.  It is made of a durable material that is supported by soft foam that is designed to help protect against side collisions.  The aim here is to help keep the baby inside the car seat.  This combined with the other features makes it very effective at doing just this.

Of course, this is just a start of a number of the different features that are available in convertible car seats.  We recommend you take a closer look at them because they can provide a great value and are made with safety in mind.
